In the independent gaming developer space, crowdfunding has proved a big win. Working on small budgets, game makers are able to use Indiegogo to pick up fans and beta testers at the same time! Here are some of the top gaming campaigns on Indiegogo from 2012. If you look at where they are located, you can get a sense of just how the international gaming community has embraced crowdfunding:
Resurrect ADOM development
Location: Witten, Germany
Thomas Biskup — the creator of ADOM, one of the most successful roguelike games ever developed and a precursor to many of today’s favorites — decided he wanted to revamp his classic game. He brought together an all-star team of developers and crossed $90,000 of total funding — nearly double his original goal.

Location: Edmonton, Canada
These game makers had an easy pitch: Halo meets Minecraft. Their campaign showed just how strong of an idea that is.

In a time of extreme economic strife in Greece, these campaigners were able to run a massively successful campaign to fund their intergalactic board game. It’s a race between alien peoples to build the best space station!

This German miniatures-making company celebrated it’s 10th anniversary by funding a special edition set of characters. They promised to keep developing the game further if they met and then passed their $5,00 goal. They made it to $83,709.

One of Indiegogo’s first campaigns run using Euros, it sought to raise money to formally lay down the rules and background elements of the successful “apocalyptic skirmishes game” called Eden.
